A Character-Rich Home Reinvented for Modern Comfort

Project Background

Situated in the heart of Bassetlaw, Southview reflects the heritage of Nottinghamshire’s colliery villages—originally heated with coal and, more recently, a wood-fired stove. Like many off-gas homes in the region, it faced challenges with heat retention, energy efficiency and rising running costs.

As part of Bassetlaw District Council’s Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) scheme—a government initiative to support off-grid homes—Southview was selected for a full fabric-first transformation. The brief: significantly improve thermal performance while enhancing the home’s exterior in a way that remained sympathetic to its original character.

Our Approach

S360 delivered a carefully considered package of improvements, centred around 90mm EPS external wall insulation to dramatically improve the property’s thermal envelope. To respect the look and feel of the original façade, the front elevation was finished with brick slips—meticulously applied by hand to replicate traditional detailing—while a crisp white render was used on the side and rear elevations to introduce a light, contemporary contrast.

New fascias, soffits and guttering were fitted to complement the façade enhancements, offering clean architectural lines and improved rainwater management. To complete the visual refresh, a new porch canopy was installed—offering shelter, style and a welcome sense of entrance.

Internally, ventilation was upgraded with mechanical extraction fans fitted in the kitchen and bathroom. These play a vital role in maintaining indoor air quality and preventing condensation in homes with improved insulation and airtightness.

All works were completed with S360's trademark care, professionalism and respect for the residents—qualities that had a clear and lasting impact on the homeowners.

Lasting Impact

The transformation of Southview has delivered substantial gains in both energy performance and curb appeal. The property’s EPC rating improved from E47 to D68—an impressive uplift that translates directly into reduced heat loss, greater comfort and a more sustainable living environment.

The upgrades are projected to save the homeowners approximately £330 per year in energy bills, while also preventing over 900kg of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere annually—a significant step toward greener living.

The homeowners commented:
“We just wanted to say your project management of our home during installation of External Wall Insulation and all associated works has been fabulous, nothing was too much trouble! Your customer care is top notch, all teams were so professional, polite and clean. Brilliant! Our home is now so warm and looks so good!”

A traditional village home now reimagined with smart, sustainable design—Southview stands as a benchmark for how thoughtful upgrades can preserve charm while delivering 21st-century comfort.
